The original plan was to spend another day “working” here in virgin gorda and then head to St Marteen to try to deal with the outboard and pick up our dingy chaps at sunset for an overnight sail. Alas when i got up i discovered the weather window had moved in with the sub 1 meter seas ending at midnight tonight rather than noon tomorrow. aimee was happily doing yoga so i let her finish up before informing her of the new plans. i remember mentioning one of the upsides to this was we could fish. did i mention now that i dont have to clean the fish i am a HUGE fishing fan!
we finally got under way around 10am after aimee finished up some work emails. the seas where as forecast and we motored along at about 5.5 kts burning about 1.5 gal per hour. it was another beautiful day we had two lines out and then about the same time in the afternoon that we ot the tuna “bang” we got another hit. i started “reeling” in the fish hand over hand while aimee went for the gaff. as he got closer to the boat i could see it was a beautiful dorado. i remembered back to eating dorodo sashimi in mexico on castons boat and loosing a dorado on palap with larry crossing to mazetlan. i was drooling imagining the suchimi and the last thing i wanted to do was loose this guy. i was pulling as fast as i could but i could see him accelerating and almost passing the boat. i thought i had lost him when the line went slack a bit but kept the tension on finally he was out of the water but lunging all over the place. aimee who is normally deadly with the gaff could not make contact. i kept dragging him further and further into the cockpit not wanting to loose him. we finally got a gaff in it and hit it over the head with the winch handle a few times and dragged it behind the boat. we tried to bleed it but it did not seem to have near as much blood as the tuna.
aimee did a great job cleaning and prepping the fish while i was cleaning up the mess in the cockpit and untangling the lines. two hours later after the dorado had chilled we had a delicious sashimi appetizer, it was so good we went back for seconds! after this everything was anti climactic but we did do another flawless nighttime anchoring at 2am. the almost full moon helped us see the idiots around us who refuse to run an anchor light!

Well, you certainly got our attention here. George was just asking me “Wonder what lure she used?” as I scrolled down to reveal the answer. Then of course, we had to calculate the length according to the ladder rungs. Very clever of you to display those. Then you had us drooling at the presentation. Looked very tasty.
Great new website, keep up the good work. Looking forward to more food photos of Aimee’s cooking and repair entries. Dorado and/or wahoo (the cooked version) is much nicer than tuna, in our opinion.
Catherine
hi catherine, thanks for the comment, we have a pretty long list of dodos on the white board so we should have plenty of projects coming along! cheers roger
Nice fish!
