Yes, that was the surprise as we headed down the dock to Tiki. We had locked her up but had not locked the dingy engine on as our 1st lock had corroded onto our cable and it was not possible to thread the cable through the engine with out cutting the lock off. Quite frankly we did not expect someone to walk up or dingy up in front of a crowd of people and unbolt and cart off our engine but that is exactly what happened.
The initial response was shock then i started screaming aimee started crying, the two locals i had been chatting with on the pier mysteriously disappeared. we where basically in shock not knowing how this could possibly have happened knowing we could not afford to replace the engine especially after the generator not to mention the yard bill.
jen finally brought us back to reality and offered to row us out to waka irei. aimee spent the whole trip crying in the stern and i sat in the front and fumed about f–ing Grenadian criminals. we made it back to wak irie and i continued to rant about leaving this country immediately. of course this was impossible as we where on the hard which made me even more frustrated. then i moved on to we where done cruising and had to go back and get jobs that we just could not afford this. no matter how hard we tried to save money by cutting back on ourselves we just could not win. eventually we wore out and passed out squished together on this small couch in the waka iere salon.
meanwhile sietse was still missing. jen went out again in cube libre with her engine looking everywhere. she finally came back and discovered him passed out in the cockpit. we would find out in the morning he had run into some other friends forgotten all about us and the meeting plan and eventually ended up back on another boat only to finally be returned home.
the next morning our anger had turned into pure depression. i felt just like i did when my laptop and hard drive where stollen from my house in long beach. i was pretty sure i knew who did it as they had removed each gps tracker and left only them behind but i knew there was nothing i could do about it. i was sure someone had seen someone walk off with our engine but obviously they just figured rich yatie i deserve this more than they do and no one stepped forward to stop it.
jen made us breakfast and tried to cheer us up to no avail. we reported the theft on the VHF net and then sietse dropped us off in the marina. as we where in a mega marina all the taxi drivers tried to rip us off wanting 30 usd for a 10ec trip. we told them we would walk, adding to our depression.
eventually we made it home with the help of a local bus and claimed the ladder into our home on the hard. aimee tried to cheer me up with a beer and pizza deal on the way home but i am pretty sure this is another bait and switch program. and i thought the dead generator was the most depressing day of my life. oh and they stole both my dingy engine hoses and connectors so we cant use the back up dingy with out buying a new cable for 50$ US, supporting the local economy after being ripped off.

What about the police? Can they not track it with your serial number? Once when we were in the BVI, someone walked off with Dave’s video camera on Jost Van Dyke. He reported it to the authorities and when they finally recovered it, after a LONG time, they sent it back to us in Florida. Now maybe Grenada is different, but we found local police very accommodating… not wanting tourism to get a bad name on their island.
Good luck you two. And remember it is always darkest before dawn…
So very sorry to hear about all the bad news. Hope your luck turns around now. That is a very small couch!!!!
